Why We’ve Added OGS HX230 Hubs to Our Carbon Road Wheel Range
At VeloElite Wheels, we have spent years building our carbon wheels almost exclusively with DT Swiss hubs.
There is a good reason for that. DT Swiss has earned one of the strongest reputations in cycling for producing hubs that are reliable, easy to service and engineered to perform for years. Their 350, 240 and 180 hubs have become the benchmark against which many premium hubs are judged.
So when we decided to introduce another hub option for our road wheels, it had to be something genuinely special.
That hub is the OGS HX230 road hub.
If you have not heard of OGS before, you are certainly not alone. DT Swiss is a household name among cyclists, while OGS is much less widely known. But that does not mean the product lacks engineering quality. In fact, the HX230 is exactly the sort of hub that appeals to us as wheel builders: lightweight, beautifully made, serviceable and designed with serious performance in mind.
A Premium Hub from a Specialist Engineering Brand
Cycling has always had big-name component brands that dominate awareness. But behind the scenes, many outstanding products come from smaller specialist manufacturers that focus more on engineering than marketing.
OGS is one of those brands.
Their approach is based around precision manufacturing, premium materials, low weight and practical serviceability. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, they have focused on producing high-quality hubs that combine performance with long-term usability.
That approach fits very well with how we build wheels at VeloElite. We are not interested in adding components just because they are new or different. Any hub we offer has to make sense from a performance, reliability and wheel-building perspective.
Why the OGS HX230 Stood Out
The OGS HX230 immediately caught our attention because it offers something slightly different to our existing DT Swiss options.
It is extremely light, coming in a little lighter than even the flagship DT Swiss 180 hubset, while still being designed as a durable road hub for proper riding rather than a fragile weight-saving experiment.
For riders building a premium carbon road wheelset, that matters. Wheel weight is not everything, but reducing rotating weight without compromising reliability is always attractive.
The HX230 also features a high-quality construction, premium bearings and a ratchet-style engagement system. That combination gives it a very strong specification on paper, but more importantly, it is the kind of design that makes sense in the real world.
The Ratchet Drive System
One of the key features of the HX230 is its ratchet drive mechanism.
Many riders will already be familiar with ratchet systems through DT Swiss hubs. Instead of relying on a small number of pawls engaging individually, a ratchet system spreads the load more evenly across the drive mechanism.
The benefits are clear:
- Smooth engagement
- Efficient power transfer
- Good durability
- Simple maintenance
- A clean, proven mechanical design
This is one of the reasons ratchet-style systems have become so popular in premium road hubs. They offer a strong balance of performance and reliability without unnecessary complexity.
Why Serviceability Matters
One of the main reasons we have trusted DT Swiss for so long is serviceability.
A good hub should not be treated as a disposable component. It should be something that can be maintained, serviced and kept running smoothly for years.
That is also one of the reasons we were comfortable adding OGS to our range. The HX230 is not just light for the sake of being light. It is a proper performance hub with sensible engineering behind it.
For us, that is important. We want customers to buy wheels with confidence, knowing that the components have been chosen carefully and not simply because they look impressive on a specification sheet.
Why Brand Recognition Is Not Everything
It is completely understandable that many riders feel more comfortable choosing a brand they already know.
DT Swiss has earned that trust over many years, and we continue to recommend and build with DT Swiss hubs every day.
But cycling is full of specialist brands producing outstanding components without the same level of mainstream recognition. Some of the most interesting, best-engineered products in the industry come from companies that are known more by enthusiasts, mechanics and wheel builders than by the wider cycling public.
OGS fits into that category.
It may not yet have the same name recognition as DT Swiss, but the HX230 is a very impressive hub in its own right.
Are We Moving Away from DT Swiss?
No. Absolutely not.
DT Swiss remains central to our wheel range. We continue to offer the excellent:
- DT Swiss 350
- DT Swiss 240
- DT Swiss 180
Each of these hubs has its place.
The DT Swiss 350 is a superb choice for riders who want proven reliability and excellent value. The DT Swiss 240 offers a lighter, more premium option with outstanding long-term performance. The DT Swiss 180 sits at the top of the range, combining very low weight with ceramic bearings and flagship-level engineering.
The OGS HX230 does not replace any of those options. It simply gives riders another premium choice.
Who Should Choose the OGS HX230?
The OGS HX230 is ideal for riders who want a very light, high-performance hubset with a distinctive feel and specification.
It will particularly appeal to cyclists who:
- Want to build an extremely light carbon road wheelset
- Like premium engineering from specialist brands
- Want something less common than the usual mainstream options
- Still expect durability and serviceability
- Care about both performance and individuality
For many riders, DT Swiss will still be the obvious choice, and that is completely understandable. But for those looking for something a little different, the OGS HX230 is a very exciting option.
Our Verdict
We do not add components to our range lightly.
As wheel builders, we care about far more than headline weight. A hub has to build well, ride well, last well and make sense for the customer.
The OGS HX230 impressed us because it combines extremely low weight with proper engineering, good serviceability and a premium overall feel.
DT Swiss remains the trusted benchmark in our range, but the OGS HX230 earns its place alongside it.
For riders looking to build one of our lightest and most distinctive carbon road wheelsets, the OGS HX230 is now a very strong option.
